On 1 June 2024 we set off from Bratislava to discover the beauty of Romania’s Danube Delta: pelicans, wildcats, the horses of Letea, Sulina, Caraorman and a return via Constanța and Brașov.
This “flying jewel” is the main reason I took up nature photography in earnest. Three seasons of searching for nest burrows, hiding and waiting for that perfect kingfisher shot.
Winter is ideal for photographing birds at feeders. Even without snow, our hide gave us great tits, a nuthatch, a brambling, a treecreeper and even a goldcrest.
After a call – “We’re going to watch a pygmy owl nest, are you in?” – I spent five days at a Eurasian pygmy owl nest with German filmmakers, white bait mice and a fledgling’s first flight.
